Stoker (2013)

98 min   -   Drama | Horror | Mystery | Thriller

After India's father dies, her Uncle Charlie, who she never knew existed, comes to live with her and her unstable mother. She comes to suspect this mysterious, charming man has ulterior motives and becomes increasingly infatuated with him.

Director: Chan-wook Park

Writers: Wentworth Miller, Erin Cressida Wilson (contributing writer)

Stars: Mia Wasikowska, Nicole Kidman, Matthew Goode

I can't really describe my anticipation for the English-language debut from Chan-wook Park, director of Bakjwi and the Lady Vengeance trilogy most popularly represented by its second installment, Oldboy. Though he isn't directing from his own screenplay -- those duties were left to Wentworth Miller, who was guided by the dark-hued hand of Erin Cressida Wilson -- Park has narrative and stylistic flourishes that are a custom fit for Nicole Kidman's art-house leanings. Meanwhile, Mia Wasikowska continues to out-Fanning her peers with a series of wonderfully offbeat moves.

The Last Exorcism Part II (2013)

Horror | Thriller

As Nell Sweetzer tries to build a new life after the events of the first movie, the evil force that once possessed her returns with an even more horrific plan.

Director: Ed Gass-Donnelly

Writers: Damien Chazelle (screenplay), Ed Gass-Donnelly (screenplay)

Stars: Ashley Bell, Andrew Sensenig, Judd Lormand

Most interesting to us is the studio switch that finds the sequel to the surprise horror hit being released by CBS Films instead of Lionsgate. Back in 2010, the genre specialists relentlessly marketed the original for an $20 million opening weekend. Looks like CBS Films is determined to stick around and has begun to shell out for proven box-office hits (remember how Zena u crnom performed for them). Eli Roth is back in producer mode and probably knows more than anyone that this really is nowhere near the the last exorcism for poor Nell Sweetzer. Indie director Ed Gass-Donnelly (Small Town Murder Songs) gets the call up to the semi-big leagues.

21 and Over (2013)

Comedy

The night before his big medical school exam, a promising student celebrates his 21st birthday with his two best friends.

Directors: Jon Lucas, Scott Moore

Writers: Jon Lucas (screenplay), Scott Moore (screenplay)

Stars: Miles Teller, Justin Chon, Jonathan Keltz

Considering the presence of screenwriters-turned-directors Jon Lucas and Scott Moore, and the fact that this movie was partially shot in China, I'm sensing we might be in store for a Hangover II-level misadventure for the Project X crowd. What doesn't make me cringe is knowing that Relativity Media, the studio behind the project, tends to make likeable if underrated youth comedies, including the recent Take me home tonight. Also, star Miles Teller has successfully avoided our scorn by surviving both Footloose and the aforementioned PX with his charm intac

Jack the Giant Slayer (2013)

Adventure | Drama | Fantasy

A modern day fairy tale in which the long-standing peace between men and giants is threatened, as a young farmer leads an expedition into the giants' kingdom in hopes of rescuing a kidnapped princess.

Director: Bryan Singer

Writers: Darren Lemke (screenplay), Christopher McQuarrie (screenplay)

Stars: Nicholas Hoult, Stanley Tucci, Ewan McGregor

Bryan Singer earned major cred for overseeing X-Men: Prva generacija while keeping his commitment to Jack, his passion project. Nicolas Hoult held his own amongst First Class's starry cast, so I'm excited to see how he fares with his first leading Hollywood role. Of course, any first indication of what this fairy tale will look like is eagerly anticipated.

Dark Skies (2013)

Horror | Sci-Fi | Thriller

As the Barret family's peaceful suburban life is rocked by an escalating series of disturbing events, they come to learn that a terrifying and deadly force is after them.

Director: Scott Stewart

Writer: Scott Stewart

Stars: Keri Russell, Josh Hamilton, Dakota Goyo

What currently reads like an "American Horror Story: Asylum" sub-plot gets stretched into a feature from director Scott Charles Stewart, who will hopefully ease off the visual-effects indulgences that turned his first two movies -- Legija and Sveti ratnik -- into unintended spectacles. The first trailer was refreshingly old school.

Snitch (2013)

112 min   -   Action | Drama | Thriller

A father goes undercover for the DEA in order to free his son who was imprisoned after being set up in drug deal.

Director: Ric Roman Waugh

Writers: Justin Haythe, Ric Roman Waugh

Stars: Dwayne Johnson, Susan Sarandon, Jon Bernthal

Stuntman-turned-filmmaker Ric Roman Waugh takes the reins for Dwayne Johnson's second attempt to come across like an everyman (see: Walking Tall). What's most encouraging is the supporting cast, which is populated by three guys from some of the butchest cable TV programs in recent times: Jon Bernthal ("Walking Dead"), Harold Perrineau ("Oz"), and Michael Kenneth Williams ("The Wire"). We have to wonder if this movie would have been even better as a mini-series?

No (2012)

118 min  -  Drama

An ad executive comes up with a campaign to defeat Augusto Pinochet in Chile's 1988 referendum.

Director: Pablo Larraín

Writers: Pedro Peirano (screenplay), Antonio Skármeta (play)

Stars: Gael García Bernal, Alfredo Castro, Antonia Zegers

Pablo Larraín fourth film is poised to be in Stateside breakthrough; even before it earned its Best Foreign Language Oscar nomination, the story of an ad exec's work to bring down Pinochet's tyrannical reign over Chile was picking up accolades across the world for Larraín's 1980s period details and Gael Garcia Bernal's performance as René Saavedra. Might we see renewed (and deserved) interest in Larraín's Tony Manero and Post Mortem?

A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III (2012)

86 min   -   Comedy

A graphic designer's enviable life slides into despair when his girlfriend breaks up with him.

Director: Roman Coppola

Writer: Roman Coppola

Stars: Charlie Sheen, Jason Schwartzman, Bill Murray

The first trailer didn't quite stoke my enthusiasm for Roman Coppola's follow-up to the visual achievement that was CQ, but I have faith that his new work is much more than a costume party starring Charlie Sheen. And if I'm wrong, I will finally side with a close friend who asserts that there is no space in the current art world for musings of the Coppola Aristocracy.

Escape from Planet Earth (2013)

Animation | Adventure | Comedy

Astronaut Scorch Supernova finds himself caught in a trap when he responds to an SOS from a notoriously dangerous alien planet.

Director: Cal Brunker

Writers: Tony Leech (story), Cal Brunker

Stars: Brendan Fraser, Sarah Jessica Parker, Jessica Alba

The Weinstein Company is an Oscar-winning powerhouse, for sure, but they haven't fared well in the lucrative world of animated movies. The studio has turned to one of the production companies behind Hoodwinked! for their space adventure, which admittedly looks cool with its big, blue-headed astronauts. But the keys to success with kid movies are marketing and advertising, the kinds of expenditures Harvey & co. specialize in

when there are awards to be won.
